Metalcasting and the Basic Process

In its most basic summary, metalcasting is defined as liquid metal being poured into a mold and then being allowed to harden in that shape. Of course, this is only the beginning part of the process, and there is much more to be done. It’s especially helpful because this particular procedure is extremely versatile and it can be used for a variety of needs. The amount of technical education that this area requires is important because there are many different fields where this process can be applied.

The molds that are used for liquid metal have to be able to withstand very high temperatures, so there are certain materials that are more preferred, such as limestone, ceramic and wood. Normally, wax, sand or clay is used to shape these materials, so the end result is the right design. Sometimes these molds are made to snap together so the pieces can be combined when the work is finished.

Depending on which type of end result the customer is looking for, the foundries where this metal is melted can mix other alloys into it, creating a different product. Skilled operators are required to work with these materials, especially after alloys are mixed in because it requires more experience and technical skill.

Once the metal has hardened into the preferred shape, then the product must be finished through the process of grinding, sanding and polishing. Each material that is mixed will require its own amount of grinding and this is something that must be determined by the manufacturer.

Some projects in this field might e small enough to be completed at home with a personal foundry setup. If this is the case, then the person operating it needs to be very careful so they don’t cause an accidental fire. It is possible to find websites online that will help you become more educated about how to do this, but be sure to double check all the safety precautions first.

Do this without injury and by preventing accidents by watching videos online that people post of various metalcasting processes. For those who want to take it further, they might want to check out the American Foundry Society to see how they can learn directly from them.

This field gives an individual a lot of opportunity to create products that are used in so many areas and you can learn as much as you wish to pursue. While this article may introduce you to the start of metalcasting, you can definitely pursue it much further if you care to have a career in that direction. Metalcasting is a decades old industry and it will continue to remain for the foreseeable future.
